Unsafe abortion rampant in Sindhuli
SINDHULIMADI: Scores of women from marginalised communities in Sindhuli have been facing a hard time due to unsafe abortion as a result of lack of awareness.
According to sources, women, in these communities, use pesticides and pieces of glass to abort the baby in womb.
Majhi and Danuwar women of Kapilakot, Kalpabrikshya, Kyaneshwor, Bhadrakali, Mahadevsthan, among other VDCs, are at peril due to lack of information about safe abortion, said Bal Kumari Shrestha, a social activist who has been working at SEEDS, an NGO working in the field of women’s health.
According to her, pregnant women with unwanted babies consume ground glass and stinging nettle juice and even poison to abort babies. “The community people either do not know there is a safe abortion facility in the district or do not approach these health facilities due to shame,” she said, adding, “Thus the number of unsafe abortions has not receded.”
SEEDS Nepal has been launching various programmes, targeting locals of Hatpate, Sirthauli, Dudhauli, Belghari and Bastipur, among other VDCs to raise awareness. “The status of health of women has improved after our campaign,” said Shrestha. Three women died due to unsafe abortion last year.
Although the government invests millions of rupees on safe abortion, lack of awareness has precluded positive results. The only abortion centre in Sindhuli has also not been effective with only two patients visited the facility last year.
